Q&A

With Autism Awareness month coming up in April, we sat down with established psychologist, Lorraine Flint, who specializes in children, families and relationship building.

Q: In your field of psychology, what are the early signs of autism and how should parents intervene?

A: I’d say that people need to educate themselves about the early signs of autism and disorders of relating and communicating. Parents need to trust their instincts if they feel their child is not developing the early signs of being interested in the world, adjusting to familiar sounds and touch, or unable to communicate in the most rudimentary way how they feel.  It is important that parents do not wait and that they consult with as many specialists as possible.

Q: There has been an increasingly high number of autistic-born babies. What is your take on the rise of autism?

A: A combination of factors seems to be related.  Research suggests a link between a predisposition or innate vulnerability in the child and environmental factors.  In addition, early detection and more defined diagnostic criteria should also be considered.

We will be having an Autism Awareness promotional week here at Fabio’s. What do you think is the best way to raise awareness?

Q: There are many ways to raise awareness about autism and there are many organizations that have and continue to bring ASD awareness to every community.  However, it is often the families of children diagnosed with ASD who bring the most awareness of the disorder to their neighborhood in order to raise funds and help organizations.  There is always new research coming out about ASD and new intervention modalities being offered.  I think that fundraisers and events such as the one Fabio’s Hair Studio is hosting in April will no doubt help raise awareness and remind everyone of the high prevalence of ASD in this community.
